Pablo Tarantino is an Argentinian born/Europe based drummer, composer and educator. In his debut album he transforms the influences of his many-sided cultural and musical background into Charnia. The album takes name after the extinct living organism which grew on the sea floor, 570 to 550 million years ago, and that encompasses the beauty of our life on Earth.
1. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your upcoming release? How did the concept for this project come to life?
Pablo Tarantino: All pieces of my debut album are inspired by various aspects of life such as nostalgia, love, belonging, estrangement, evolution, birth, death. I was inspired by a BBC documentary called First Life, which explains the evolution of life on Earth and the origin of a living creature called Charnia. I found this story very powerful and a great representation of life, which is why I named my album after it.
2. What was the most challenging or rewarding part of the recording process for this album/single?Â
P. T.: I recorded this album the old-fashioned way, we did multiple takes of each song and didn't edit anything during the mix. It was definitely a challenge, but I have the luxury of having friends and great musicians in my band, which made everything easier and special.
3. How does this release reflect your evolution as an artist? Are there any themes or messages you’re particularly excited to share?Â
P. T.: This is a big step as an artist. I wrote the music for my debut album trying to blend all my influences and connect with my feelings to be completely honest. I'm really excited to see what people will feel when they hear all these themes of life that we all experience in a different way.
4. What’s one thing you hope listeners take away from this project?Â
P. T.: I hope listeners connect with the music and the stories we are telling through its melodies and textures.
5. What can we expect from your live performances tied to this release, and how do you plan to bring the album’s sound to the stage?Â
P. T.: When we perform this music it sounds different every time because of the huge space it has for improvisation. You can expect a different energy and sound on every performance. We have some confirmed dates in Germany, but more dates will be announced soon.
6. If you had to describe your upcoming release in three words, what would they be?Â
P. T. : Honest, singable, colourful.
7. What was the most surprising moment during the creation of this album/single?Â
P. T. : It's always a wonderful experience to see a song appear as if it already existed before anyone wrote it.
8. Is there a specific track from this release that you feel particularly connected to? Why?Â
P. T.: I have a strong connection with ‘The Uproot’. The story of my family and myself is hugely impacted by immigration and feeling uprooted. I wrote this song inspired by the feelings you experience when you’re missing home, family, friends and little things.
9. Can you share any behind-the-scenes stories from the recording or writing process that stand out?Â
P. T.: The song ‘Song for Terezinha’ is a song dedicated to my wife. At the beginning I chose a fake name ‘Palmengarten’ to keep it a secret. At our first concert I explained to the audience and her the real name and its story.
10. What does this release mean to you personally, and how does it reflect your journey as an artist?
P. T.: This is the first one, it’s very special and hopefully the beginning of a long journey.
